The relationship between villages from traditional times to date from ethnological perspective.

Abstract

Viet villages in the North have been through a long process of establishment and development. Each village has unique features of the natural environment, demography, and history of establishment, thus has different cultural traits. In the context of wet rice cultivation under the forces of feudalism, village culture emerged through the relationships between villages. Along with patterns of agreed relationships represented by the custom of sworn brothers, there were tensions and conflicts amongst villages, especially around farming land. This article provides ethnographic data and some comments on the agreements or disagreements in Viet village relationships under feudalism as well as during the process from the August Revolution (1945) to date.
