Ky Lua Market Street’s Residents, its Formation and Development

Abstract

Based on historical and geographical sources and actual surveys, the article
clarifies the origin of the place named “Ky Lua”, the birth time of Ky Lua market street, and
its development, which is associated with the population structure, ethnicity, street layout,
trading situation through historical periods, the role of some Viet and Hoa ethnic mandarins
in the development of Ky Lua market street, the role of Ky Lua market street in Lang Son
urban area, and the development of this urban area. The article affirms that Ky Lua market is
one of the largest markets in Lang Son and the Northeast region; it is an essential part of
Lang Son urban area – one of the large ancient urban areas formed early in the border
region; and it is the centre of trade and cultural exchange between Vietnam and China, the
lowlands and the uplands.
