Abstract

Old collective zones in Hanoi are products of the early period of socialist
construction. They hold memories that help us understand the changes in the daily lives of
residents in these areas from previous periods to the present. Furthermore, the collective zones
serve as places to preserve the spiritual and cultural values of the subsidy period that still
endure today. In the current trend in Hanoi, collective zones are gradually being replaced by
new condominium-style high-rise buildings, which will lead to the loss of the relationships and
lifestyle that have existed for more than half a century in the unique space of Hanoi. Through
the lens of spatial construction, the article examines the formation and transformation of
household residential spaces. From this, an analysis of the negotiations among residents in the
collective zones aims to highlight the relationships between individuals, households, and the
community. Negotiations occur in every space and exhibit the characteristics of the old collective
zones in Hanoi.
