Some Traditional Handicrafts in Vinh Yen Province During the French Colonial Period

Abstract

The article focuses on presenting a picture of typical traditional handicrafts
(ceramics, metal forging and casting, carpentry, and weaving) in terms of popularity, output,
and profits brought to the artisans and the contribution of these occupations to the economic
life of Vinh Yen province in modern times (1858-1945), especially in the 1930s. From there,
the article evaluates the changes in this economic sector under the impact of French colonial
exploitation implemented in Vietnam in general and Vinh Yen province in particular. This
period showed the manifestation of exchange and contact between French and Vietnamese
cultures in modern times. Many traditional handicraft products maintain lasting vitality today
because of their irreplaceable characteristics.
