Different Reactions to Land Appropriation in Some Suburban Communities in Hanoi

Abstract

Land is an essential resource in urban development. In recent years in our
country, land appropriation policies aimed at promoting industrialization and urbanization
have contributed to socio-economic development, enhancing the quality of life for urban
residents and inhabitants of surrounding rural areas. The majority of people agree with and
adhere to the State's land policy. However, differing reactions to the land acquisition process,
compensation, and support have been noted among some individuals. This article, based on a
synthesis of available literature and the results of field research in two peri-urban village
communities in Hanoi over the past decade, will elucidate the diversity of responses, shedding
light on the perspectives, thoughts, and aspirations of people regarding land and current land
appropriation policies.
