The Fishermen and the “Magnates” in the Central Coastal Area
Abstract
The writing deals with one of the ways and means of the fishermen in the central coastal provinces from Da Nang to Khanh Hoa in solving the final resource for building, purchasing or repairing the fishing ships, buying the fishing tackles and raw, and working materials for each fish catching trip which is the borrowing capital of the “magnates”. It indicates clearly the basis of appearance, existence, components, ways of operation of the “magnates” (building the fishing ships for the fishermen, lending the fishermen capital, advancing the raw and working materials and necessary appliances and then buying the products of the fishermen after each fish catching trip). Besides a number of active aspects, the operation of lending capital of the “magnates” is the lending money at interest in a “latent” form in nature which has made a large part of fishermen subordinate heavily to the “magnates” so that the formers have been difficult to overcome poverty as well as has caused a lot of negative socio-economic consequences for the fishermen and localities.
