Abstract

The article shows that at present, in the fishing villages along Lo river, beside fishing, people have made the new businesses such as river transportation, trade, employment, cage fish farming or exploitation of sand and gravel, etc. The current common trend of these fishing villages is when fishing households have favorable conditions for occupation change, the fishing will not be their prior selection. This is a result of many factors including socio-cultural factors such as beliefs and local knowledge relating to catching aquatic products, conditions of health care and education together with social relationships of fishermen. Besides those, the State’s policies of socio-economic development also play important role for change of livelihoods of fishermen.
