“Ethnotelling” Method for the Rural Community Research: Korean Hwanggol Village Case
Abstract
In this article, the authors introduce the “ethnotelling” as a new type of ethnography - a research method for exploring some particular villages. Using this new method, they describe Hwanggol village located in Gumdan of Incheon, Korea. To figure out the storytelling method using local cultural resources, this article adopts ethnotelling including ethnographical stages based on fieldwork. The ethnotelling consists of the following stages: region selection -> prior investigation -> main investigation -> story creation -> OSMU (One-Source-Multi-Use). Of them, the most important stage in ethnotelling is story creation which summarizes the resources and makes fundamental materials relevant to certain genre. This article additionally shows how storytelling is used for middle school students’ edutainment. Going to the conclusions, the authors point out that ethnotelling should: i) describe the spot lively; ii) contain diversity; and iii) have narratives.
