This article examines economic transformations among the Black Thai group in Nam Ren village, Chieng Son commune, Moc Chau district, Son La province under the impact of the migration and resettlement project in service of the construction of Son La Hydroelectric Power Plant. Based on ethnographic materials collected on a research trip in 2008, this research focuses on various ethnic economic changes: land ownership, agriculture, trade and natural resource extraction. The research illustrates that despite preliminary positive effects of the resettlement, Black Thai migrants in Nam Ren are still facing many difficulties in life and agricultural production, which requires urgent support from the government agencies to help the resettled people to overcome their financial hardships.
