Hunting and Fishing Spirits of the Bru - Van Kieu Ethnic Group

Abstract

This articles examines the spirits relating to hunting and fishing of the Bru - Van Kieu in Quang Tri province with the aim of answering the three following questions: 1) How are the hunting and fishing spirits imagined in the local people’s mind; 2) What are said spirits’ roles; and 3) How do the local people behave with the said spirits? The study shows that the hunting and fishing spirits are envisioned in three different levels: general spirits, specific spirits, and spirits in human form. These spirits not only ensure the development, reproduction, and regeneration of wild animals including fish, but also play an important role in maintaining the hunting and fishing culture of the Bru - Van Kieu people. In order to achieve success in hunting and fishing, the Bru - Van Kieu ethnic group must satisfy the spirits’ demands by giving the spirits ritual offerings.
