This article examines the phenomenon of the Thang Long traditional education system, which has a long history of achieving successful results in Vietnam’s highly competitive government examinations. Thang Long has a strong tradition for learning as do other areas in Vietnam and the author explores a number of other successful graduates belonging to famous scholarly lineages. After comparing well known scholars, the author suggests there are various reasons behind the success in the competitive government examinations. They include: first, an appreciation of learning and also an appreciation of effective individuals in the government; second, they study central and local government bureaucracies; third, there is a strong commitment by parents for academic success; and fourth, the students possess both a fondness for learning and a strong will to overcome any and all academic challenges.
