Return to Magic and Classification of Magic

  • Phan Hữu Dật

Abstract

This article describes white magic and discusses the differences between the black and white magic. The author classifies white magic into four types: magic for earning livelihood, magic for disease treatment, magic for love, and magic for war. In an effort to differentiate between the good and evil magic, the author states that the black magic is generally dangerous to the community because it makes the society unstable. Black magic is therefore strongly opposed and rejected by the community. Different from other researchers, the author believes that use of white magic can be harmless to an individual while being harmful to another. Accordingly, the author rejects the good and evil divide between black and white magic continuum, suggesting instead that white magic is better described as the color grey.
