“Cấp sắc” Ritual Ceremonies and Traditional Culture of the Lam Dien Yao (Indigo Yao) Ethnic Group in China
Abstract
This study presents the Yao ethnic group in China, including the indigo Yao people and some of their typical cultural aspects. The authors focus on the special ritual ceremony of the Yao, the so-called “Cấp sắc”, a typical cultural factor of the Yao that plays an important role in their community. “Cấp sắc” ceremony is described in every detail, specifically, the correct order of the ceremony, related rules and principles, social and cultural significance of this ceremony for male individuals and the community. The authors conclude that it is important to maintain and develop this ceremony because of its good moral values. The ceremony aids in the stabilization and good development of the Yao community as well as towards maintaining harmony with other ethnic groups.
