The article investigates into the change of farming from the self-sufficient farming to commodity one which brings the cash income to the Tay people in Po Cai village. At present, although the Tay people in this village still have maintained the different types of traditional farming (wet-rice cultivation, swiddening and gardening), they have made the certain changes in their farming activities so as to adapt to the changing living environment. Specifically, they diversify the crops, mechanize production, change production seasons, develop irrigation systems, utilize manure and speed up production of commodity products. Yet, at present, the farming activities of the Tay people in Po Cai village still have been facing a lot of challenges. These challenges are the ensure of lasting food security while land and water resources become increasing limited, the difficulties of cultivation on sloping land, the change of price in domestic market, the competition of Chinese market and the risks of natural calamities and climate change.
