The Economic Transformation in the Sino-Vietnamese Border Area: The Case Study of Lang Son Province

Abstract

In the recent time, the economic structure of Lang Son province has transformed in direction of gradual increase of the ratio of service and construction-industry and spiral of the ratio of forestry and fishery. This change has had both positive and negative effects on the economic development of Sino-Vietnamese border area. Specifically, in the positive aspect, the economic development of Lang Son province has made its contribution into the hungry erasion, poverty reduction and the socio-economic development of Northeastern area of Vietnam as well as of the whole Vietnam; has created many opportunities of jobs, income and change of economic thinking of population communities and has made its contribution into the strengthening of friendly relationship between Lang Son and Quangxi provinces adjoining to Sino-Vietnamese border and two Vietnamese and Chinese nations. In the negative aspect, the above economic transformation has made its contribution into the increasing of rich-poor gap, the causing of social unstableness and the fading of traditional cultures of the ethnicities. This demands the Vietnamese government, local authorities and people to draw the experiential lessons so as to formulate the solutions to sustainable development.
