House Changes among the Yao in Ba Vi District, Hanoi Nowadays

Abstract

The Yao in Ba Vi, Hanoi is the Yao Quan Chet sub-ethnic group belonging to the Dai Ban group.  Prior to 1968, they lived on and around Ba Vi mountain. To accommodate the high terrain and sloping land, they have live in a kind of house with half land half a floor, which is suitable for the topography and practice of nomadic residence. However, since the Yao have moved from the mountain to the lower land for their sedentary resettlement, especially since the 1986 renovation, along with changes in many aspects of life, the Yao traditional house has adapted to the development trend of the ethnic groups in the same region.
