Local Knowledge of Use, Development and Management of Bamboo Shoots among the Muong Ethnic Group in Thanh Hoa Province

Abstract

This article presents the local knowledge of the Muong in Thanh Hoa province of use and management of bamboo shoots - an important forest resource. Bamboo shoots are familiar to the local people as an important food source and they are processed into different dishes that reflect the Muong eating behavior and characteristics. The regulations, customary laws relating to the management of the forest in general, and that of the bamboo shoots in particular reflect the Muong culture. Bamboo production expresses a strong cultural connection to nature and contributes to their ethnic solidarity. These experiences in use, development and management of bamboo shoots maintain their values in the modern life.
