Transformation of Economic Structure and Questions Raised in Gia Luong Commune, Gia Loc District, Hai Duong Province

  • Nguyễn Văn Tạo

Abstract

This article points out that Gia Luong commune is one of the rural areas that has undergone severe economic and social changes by the processes of industrialization and modernization. The industrialization and modernization have collided with the traditional economic structure of Gia Luong rural areas. They have shifted from rice monoculture to crop polyculture, and away from an agrarian livelihood toward an increase in industry and service. They are no longer self-sufficient in food production and rely on commodity production and an open market to survive. These changes have temporarily improved the local household economy, but they led to some alarming consequences: future food insecurity due to a loss of cultivated land; unstable development of animal husbandry and aquiculture; unsystematic development of professions; adoption of social evils; and a loss of traditional social capital.
