Drum in Ma Coong’s Life (A Case Study in Thuong Trach Commune, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province)

Abstract

This article presents specific features of the Ma Coong’s drum and its roles in Ma Moong’s life. The drum is considered an original cultural produce of Ma Moong people and enclosed are ritual ceremonies. Accordingly, the drum of the Ma Coong people is a sacred community object that is usually made and used in a sacred space; it is not used as a normal musical instrument as the other ethnic groups do. In relation to the drum, Ma Coong people yearly organize the drum breaking festival with the aim of trying their luck, praying for good harvests and growth as well as enhancing their relations with the other ethnic groups.
