Anthropology of Transnationalism: Theoretical Perspectives on Vietnamese Americans

  • Nguyễn Vũ Hoàng

Abstract

After the Vietnam War in 1975, more than three million Vietnamese have been living outside of Viet Nam; of which, more than one million are living in the United States. Beside the students who studied in the U.S before 1975, the majority of Vietnamese Americans arrived in the U.S after April 30th, 1975. How have Vietnamese Americans adapted to the life in the U.S? What are the challenges that they have to face in the immigrant society? What are the research themes that have been studied? What are the contributions to anthropological theories? This article reviews major approaches to the anthropology of transnationalism and provides an overview of anthropological studies of the Vietnamese in the United States.
