A Yao Ho Shaman in Lao Cai Province (A Case of Mr. Ban Van Xiem)
Abstract
This article deals with shamanism among the Yao Ho in Lao Cai province though an ethnographic study of Ban Van Xiem - a well-known shaman - in Cam Con commune, Bao Yen district. Mr. Xiem became a shaman after a life threatening serious disease lasting from 1986 to 1988. Because Mr. Xiem skillfully combines magic treatment, herbal and modern medicine, many Yao Ho people in Lao Cai and other areas put their trust in him in matters relating to magic healing, intervene with the dead, and carry out the “cap sac” ceremonies. The concept of disease and healing are described through past events of Mr. Xiem’s shamanistic exploits of spirit possession and healing.
