Discuss on the village and giap in Vietnam

Abstract

The villages of Viet people are the administrative units, which are independent and self-contained. In these villages, giap is an organization with the attention to the youth men. Giap performs two main functions. First, it affirms the existence of the village by implementing the obligations about the taxations and military services. Second, it ensures the order and the security of the village, take care of the life and death of the village members, organize the offer scarifies. In this article, the author discusses the issues of village and giap that are mentioned previously by some researchers. There are some questions, however, which are: Why the villages are still exit until now? Why the village is rallied closely by many relations such as kinship, residence, age, occupation, religion, etc… With the documents of ethnology and history, the author contributes to make clear for the above issues.
