Local knowledge of Thai people in natural resource management and usage (A case study in Huy Ha commune, Phu Yen district, Son La province)

Abstract

Natural resources are very important in the Thai people’s lives. Thai people have accumulated knowledge in natural resource management and usage, especially with regard to the land, water, forest, and forest products. They have much experience in classifying and protecting land and in choosing and growing suitable plants in order to have high productivity. The regulations for exploitation, use, and management the forest and its products are highly appreciated. Water resources for daily living and production are used and managed reasonably. Generally, the natural resource management is based on the regulations of the communities. Finally, the author gives prominence to the combination of local knowledge and scientific knowledge with the aims of benefiting from the advantages and reducing the disadvantages for the development of the communities.
