Cao Lan and San Chi are two local ethnic groups of San Chay (Cao Lan – San Chi) ethnic minority. With evidences on their language, culture and awareness, there are a lot of differences between these two groups according to the author; therefore, it is not satisfactory to classify them into San Chay ethnic group (Cao Lan-San Chi) as announced in 1979 on the ethnic classification list of Vietnam. According to the author, Cao Lan and San Chi should be separated into two different ethnic minorities by competent authorities.
