Media Reception of Giay and Hmong People in the Border Area of Lao Cai Province

Abstract

The Giay and Hmong are two ethnic groups residing in the border area of Lao Cai province. They have many cross-border ethnic and kinship (consanguineal and affinal) relationships, as well as economic, cultural, and social relationships with the Chinese side. Living in the border area, these ethnic groups have access to various media streams from Vietnam, China, and elsewhere. Based on the results of ethnographic fieldwork and survey questionnaires conducted in some border communes in Bat Xat and Muong Khuong districts, Lao Cai province, in 2021 and 2022, this article focuses on analysing the capacity and choice of media reception of Giay and Hmong people in the area. At the same time, it provides information and understanding about the media reception of the inhabitants of these two ethnic groups in the border area as an essential indicator to assess the effectiveness of communication in the region.
