Livelihood Changes of People in Yen Trung Commnune, Yen Phong District, Bac Ninh Province in the Context of Industrialization and Urbanization.

Abstract

Urbanization and industrialization have changed the lives of people who live in rural villages of Vietnam in recent years. Many rural areas have changed from primarily agriculture villages and communes into urban wards, towns or they have experienced a shift of economic unit structures, including agriculture, industry, industry clusters and services. Yen Trung commune, located in Yen Phong district, Bac Ninh province, has not escaped such impacts of urbanization and industrialization, especially since the Samsung industrial zone was established and began operating in 2006. Local employment has basically changed, shifting into service development that meets the demands of the industrial zone and widening the scale of industrial clusters. This article focuses on analyzing the livelihood activities of local people in the transition context. Challenges and opportunities for local people in developing sustainable livelihoods are subsequently pinpointed.
