The migration and migrating labor of the communities in the coastal area of Ca Mau province due to the impacts of climate changes and saltwater intrusion

Abstract

Ca Mau is one of 6 provinces of Ca Mau peninsula which belongs to Cuu Long river delta. Ca Mau has been affected by droughts, saltwater intrusion and coastal landslide over the passing decade. In order to sustain livelihoods and stabilize living conditions, the partial population who live along the West and East coast of the province, have to migrate for seasonal work and become migration workers besides shifting production, business models as if practicing coping mechanism to respond to climate changes and saltwater intrusion. By examining migration’s features and purposes in the researched coastal area, this article discusses sustainable development policy in the Ca Mau peninsula that based on the ideology “follow the nature”, which is in accordance with Resolution 120 (11/2017) issued by the Vietnamese government.
