Nang River in Livelihood of Yao People in Banh Trach Commune, Ba Be District, Bac Kan Province

Abstract

Using the ecological and ethnological/anthropological interdisciplinary approach, this study showed a close relationship of Nang river and economic life of Yao people in Banh Trach commune. Since the Renovation, the life of Yao people has undergone the distinguished changes. The cultivation of one crop season swiddens has been replaced by farming two crops rice water fields; irrigation systems have been improved; the animal husbandry, trade etc., have developed; the situation of food shortage and hunger has been erased. However, the environmental degradation of Nang river also has had negative effects on livelihood of Yao people. Therefore, the publication of this research finding is a scientific suggestion for defining the developmental policies of this locality
