Based on the data of seven land registers of Gia Long year No. 4 (1805) of the seven communes of Thong Nong tổng (Sub-district), Thach Lam huyện (District) of Cao Bang trấn (Province), this article analyses the forms of cultivated land tenure of one the upland and ethnic minority area in the beginning of nineteenth century. The prominent features of cultivated land tenure of this period were that the private possession made up a high ratio (over 89 percent) but in its a medium and small scale; most the cultivated land were in the hands of big lineage groups, especially the Nong lineage group; the dignitaries at sub-district level held in their hands the small areas of cultivated land, even a part of them did not have their own cultivated land. Phenomena of purchasing the cultivated lands inside or outside the village, commune even sub-district of the buyers as well as the female possessors of cultivated land arose but with their low proportion and small scale.
