In the 17 years since the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (VME) was established, in terms of organization, the VME has always had a specialized unit in charge of research. However, the VME research findings are still limited. Specifically, 1) research projects are unevenly distributed over ethnic groups and regions; 2) research projects focus only on selected sectors and themes; 3) the majority of the work is the result of either a project, other funded research, or thesis research; 4) the research depends on the very important factor whether there are “experts” or not; but, the VME staff of ethnic studies is limited; and 5) the ethnic studies of the VME in the past 17 years (1996 - 2012) have not been organized and implemented according to a master plan.
