The resettlement of Son La Hydropower Project is a great project that had been implemented before the Son La hydropower plant started operations. The two questions here are how the livelihoods of the resettled people developed, and if the resettlement has achieved the project objective of helping the people maintain or improve their livelihoods. This article points out that the Vietnamese Communist Party and the central government have created an enabling environment for the Thai people resettled by the Son La hydropower project to stablize their daily lives by giving them compensation, housing and infrastructure in the resettlement areas, and by providing them with food and seeds, etc. However, the surveys conducted in the resettlement areas show that the resettled people’s livelihood activities and daily lives are still unstablized because the resettled have not adapted to the new environment and new modes of production, as  they moved to the resettlement areas only recently.
