The author describes Thai experiences in the rice cultivation on upland plots. These experiences are expressed in the following aspects: selection of the right agricultural land, process of treating land surface, selection and cultivation of the right rice appropriate to dry land, rice trimming, weeding, rice field protection, harvest, preservation of harvested rice and rice seeds for the next crop, and weather forecasting for successful rice growth. Although the shifting cultivation, including the upland rice planting has played an important role in Thai economy, this kind of cultivation can lead to environmental degradation. The challenge is how to maintain and apply the valuable local knowledge of the Muong to food production in combination with the use of modern technology and environmental protection.
