Resettlement of Peri-urban People in Some Urban Centers of Vietnam Central Region in the Ongoing Urbanization Process
Abstract
Urbanization is rapidly expanding in many areas of Vietnam central region due to industrialization and modernization. Through a survey conducted in the four locations of Dong Hoi, Dong Ha, Hue and Da Nang, the author finds out that the urbanization in these areas is creating great challenges to those who were resettled. The greatest difficulty for resettlement is changing careers because they often have no cultivated land or natural resources after converting the farmers into urban people. In addition, their traditional social network is broken because now they live with new neighbors in the new residential areas; social evils gradually increase due to lack of jobs and ineffective social management; the environment becomes polluted because of cramped residential areas and impacts of the farmers’ lifestyle. The author goes to conclusion by suggesting some recommended solutions to the above-mentioned challenges, such as strengthening vocational training, bringing up the new urban residents a new way of life and a sense of civic responsibility, developing self-governing organizations
