Community forest management in Vietnam has experienced various stages of development; from traditional form of forest management to legal recognition of community forest management by the statutory laws. For over a decade, Vietnam has demonstrated significant efforts in developing community forest management practices, with the aim to conserve and develop the forest resources and to improve the livelihoods of forest independent communities. These are long-term objectives, which take time to realize and require a process of trying and learning. Based on the field experience in community forest management in 25 villages in 7 provinces of Vietnam, the article provides analytical discussion on the implementation of community forest management at the field level and recommendations for future policy improvements.
