This article focuses on the characteristics and changes of the livelihoods among the Pa Then group in Quang Binh District, Ha Giang Province. The traditional livelihoods of Pa Then are the shifting cultivation combined with animal husbandry and natural resource exploitation. Presently, they have been proactive in seeking out diverse incomes for the individual households based their traditional knowledge of production and self-sufficiency and through the accumulation of new knowledge and experiences.  These include changes in the household economic structure, adopting advanced technology to production, increasing the production of commodities, and active participation in non-farming activities. Pa Then have made the successful transition from traditional agriculture production toward a market oriented production system. As a result of this transition, they have improved their livelihoods and their household economy.
