This paper introduces the historical development of human-environment relations from a Western point of view. Though having been given attention by some scholars since Ancient time, this topic did not lead to the creation of systematic theories. Middle Age was the dominance of religious thoughts that considered God as the only Creator and the center of the universe. At the beginning of 19th century, there were significant developments of new theories. Since the 1950s especially, this relation has been explored from different views such as: culture, history, politics, religion and spiritualism. Overall, the role of environment in human sustainable development has been taken into consideration not only within national, regional, but also under global context.
