Abstract

Over the years, metal cutting researchers have developed a number of modeling techniques, of which the finite element method (FEM) in particular has become the most popular tool for simulating metal cutting processes. During machining, the maximum amount of heat is generated in the contact area between the tool and the workpiece. Although most of the heat generated is concentrated on the chip, the amount of heat distributed in the work piece has a great influence on the quality of the workpiece. In this paper, the temperature distribution in the work piece is simulated by the finite element method. The results of the study are used for extensive studies on the effect of temperature in macromachining.
