Abstract
Powers of a square matrix can be calculated in a variety of ways depending on the situation, but generally speaking, there is currently no way to solve the issue. This article explains how to compute powers of a 2 2 matrix using its determinant and trace. In addition, we offer generic formulas and case-specific examples in every instance. Our approach can be used to find a formula for the general term of a sequence that is given by a linear regression formula, etc. It can also be used to calculate powers of higher order square matrices on fields that are divisible rings in a wide class. The paper can serve as an advanced resource and a topic for training for university teams participating in the National Mathematics Olympiad for students
