Identification of buried objects using ground penetrating radar based on a combination of migration method and optimal algorithm

Abstract

In recent decades, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has been widely used in many fields such as forecasting landslides and subsidence, mapping urban underground works and some others. Therefore, the method for GPR processing has been increasingly developed. Processing GPR data takes a lot of time because it has gone through many stages. In this process, important parameters including depth, position, and size of the buried objects need to be determined. It is difficult to determine the parameters of the buried objects since it depends on electromagnetic wave propagation velocity in the material environment, and the manner in which this velocity varies is very complex in all different directions. In this paper, the Kirchhoff migration method is optimized by the minimum entropy and the maximum energy standards, making it possible to determine the electromagnetic wave velocity in the material. Then the depth and size of the buried object are also estimated. The proposed accuracy of this method is tested on the modeling data, and then applied for analyzing the GPR data in some places of Can Tho city.
