Abstract

The study's main objective is to survey the situation and evaluate the effectiveness of antibiotic use in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery at Can Tho General Hospital. The study design was by cross-sectional descriptive method, retrospectively with 383 patients at the Department of General Surgery who met the sampling criteria from June 2020 to December 2020. The results showed that the group of antibiotics used was very diverse and consistent with the recommendations at the three-time points: before, during, and after surgery. The antibiotics used are mainly β-lactams, of which the second-generation cephalosporin monotherapy has a high proportion compared to other antibiotic groups. The Intravenous route accounts for a high proportion compared to oral and intravenous infusions. Most patients had less than 5 days of antibiotic use. The number of patients without fever after surgery accounted for almost the absolute rate of 94%. When discharged from the hospital with a completely dry incision, the patient's condition reached 100%. Based on the results obtained from the survey, the use of antibiotics in gastrointestinal surgery patients at the Department of General Surgery at Can Tho General Hospital is largely consistent with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health.
