Study on acute toxicity, analgesic activity and anti-inflammatory effect of the herbal remedy by Dr. of Traditional Medicine Nguyen Thien Chung (An Giang province)

Abstract

As the remedy by doctor of traditional medicine Nguyen Thien Chung for treatment of spinal degeneration is rather popular in An Giang province (South Vietnam), the remedy decoctions (TS), liquid extracts (CL) and spray-dried extracts (CK) were studied on the oral acute toxicity, analgesic activity, anti-inflammatory effect. TS, CL and CK were tested at the oral dose of 160 ml/kg, 40 g/kg and 25 g/kg, respectively. At these dose, no mortality nor toxicity was observed within 72 hrs and 14 days in mice of both sexes. Besides, TS at the dose of 120 ml/kg, CL 4.585 and 2.293 g/kg, CK 2.52 and 1.26 g/kg, all decreased writhing response in mice within 40 minutes after injection of acetic acid 0.7%. At the doses of 120 ml TS/Kg, 4.585g CL/Kg, 2.52 and 1.26 mg CK/kg, no acute nor chronic anti-inflammatory effects exhibited in mice. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of TS and CK were similar to those of diclofenac.
