Evaluation of treatment compliance of hypertension patients at Giong Rieng District Medical Center, Kien Giang Province

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utilization of hypertension medication in outpatient prescriptions and identify factors related to patient compliance at Giong Rieng Medical Center in Kien Giang province. A descriptive cross-sectional and prospective study was conducted on 210 prescriptions for hypertensive outpatients aged 18 years and older at Giong Rieng Medical Center from June 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021. The most commonly prescribed antihypertensive drugs were male conversion inhibitors (70.0%) and calcium blockers (34.9%), with a majority of patients (61.3%) receiving multi-therapy regimens. The most frequently prescribed treatment was male conversion inhibitors (22.9%). Unwanted side effects were reported in 3.3% of patients experiencing increased blood uric acid, 15.2% experiencing headaches, and 4.8% experiencing dry cough. The utilization of sauna treatment with medication was reported as good in 8.1% of patients, average in 43.3%, and low in 48.6%. The highest proportion of hypertensive patients were in the age groups of 51-60 and 61-70, each accounting for 32.4% of the total. The rate of non-compliance with medication was 34.3%. Female patients were nearly four times more likely than male patients to not adhere to their medication regimen. Patients with a middle school or higher education level had the highest rates of non-compliance, with 30.4% and 31.2%, respectively. Overall, medication adherence was reported at 51.4%, with the highest rates seen in the 51-70 age group. Non-compliance was more common in female patients and
