Effective treatment combining modern medicine with traditional medicine on patients with knee osteoarthritis at Can Tho traditional medicine hospital in 2019

Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis is a common disease today. It does not cause death but causes pain, joint deformity and limits mobility, thus reducing the patient's quality of life. This is a chronic disease, and prolonged treatment can lead to many unwanted complications due to treatment drugs. Therefore, combining modern medicine and traditional medicine in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis will provide scientific evidence to contribute to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment, in accordance with current trends in medical treatment requirements. The research objective was to survey the situation of drug use and evaluate the effectiveness of combined treatment of modern medicine and traditional medicine on patients with knee osteoarthritis at Can Tho Traditional Medicine Hospital in 2019. This was a cross-sectional and retrospective descriptive study on medical records. The study sample included 133 medical records of patients with knee osteoarthritis treated with a combination of modern medicine and traditional medicine. Research results showed that the drugs used in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis were mainly NSAIDs, and the traditional medicine used in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis was mainly Doc hoat ky sinh thang, depending on the accompanying medical conditions that required reducing or adding some medications. The rate of no pain after treatment was 74.4%, mild pain 8.35%, and moderate pain 17.3%; no patients had severe pain, causing no serious adverse effects in clinical or paraclinical settings after 30 days treatment day.
