ARTISTIC VALUES OF THE DECORATIVE CERAMIC ENSEMBLE ON THE ARCHITECTURE OF TAN LAN TEMPLE IN BIEN HOA, DONG NAI PROVINCE
Abstract
Tan Lan temple, one of the most ancient architectural works with unique beauty thanks to the densely decorated ceramic statues on the roof, is located in the center of Bien Hoa city, Dong Nai in the Southeast ceramic region, which was once famous for their handmade pottery craft. The characteristics of the decorative ceramic art on this architectural work are bold cultural exchanges between the indigenous traditions of Chinese immigrants and the Vietnamese community. To clarify the artistic value of the ceramic ensemble decorated on the roof of Tan Lan communal house, by means of observation, comparison, and aesthetic analysis, the paper presents the unique visual characteristics of each individual in the complex, and also the general layout of the ensemble. In addition, the study also introduces the themes and legends used in this decorative ceramic complex and their symbolic meanings, which is necessary along with the visual form of handicraft ceramic products serving the decoration of religious and belief architectural works.
