SOME WAYS OF THE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE'S RESISTANCE TO THE CULTURAL ASSIMILATION OF THE NORTHERN EMPIRE DURING THE NORTHERN COLONIAL PERIOD
Abstract
According to historians, the Northern domination period in our country began in 111 BC, when the Nam Viet state founded by Trieu Da was dominated by the Han Dynasty and lasted until 938, when Ngo Quyen defeated the Nam Han invaders, in 939, Ngo Quyen proclaimed himself king, opening the period of Vietnamese feudal autonomy. This period lasted 1049 years. During this period, the Han Dynasty colonized our country consistently and thoroughly implemented the policy of assimilating Vietnamese culture into Han culture with two methods꞉ forced assimilation and natural assimilation.
Not willing to lose their country and enslave their people, the Vietnamese people promoted the spirit of patriotism and national pride, cleverly finding ways to desecrate Han culture, destroy the cultural assimilation plot of the Northern regime empires. The measures the Vietnamese have used to successfully fight assimilation are꞉ maintaining the national language; maintain village organization with community, autonomy, and self‑management; develop Buddhism; maintain the Mother Goddess; promote the role of women and the steadfast spirit of fighting for national independence.
