CHARACTERISTICS AND FUNCTIONS OF DIALOGUE IN THE SHORT STORY AND FILM THƯƠNG NHỚ ĐỒNG QUÊ
Abstract
Due
to
the
distinct
characteristics
of
each
medium,
dialogue
in
literary
works
and
films
exhibits
notable
differences
in
both
characteristics
and
functions.
Through
a
case
study
of
the
short
story
Thương
nhớ
đồng
quê
by
Nguyễn
Huy
Thiệp
and
the
film
adaptation
of
the
same
name
by
Đặng
Nhật
Minh,
this
paper
aims
to
compare
the
similarities
and
differences
in
the
characteristics
and
functions
of
dialogue
in
literature
and
cinema‑particularly
focusing
on
the
transformation
of
dialogue
from
page
to
screen.
Using
key
research
methods
such
as
statistical
analysis,
classification,
synthesis,
and
comparison,
we
find
that꞉
Dialogue
in
Nguyễn
Huy
Thiệp's
short
story
strongly
reflects
his
signature
style꞉
concise,
realistic,
fragmented,
dissonant,
and
deeply
philosophical,
influenced
by
the
conventions
of
prose.
When
adapted
into
film,
the
dialogue
takes
on
cinematic
qualities꞉
it
becomes
shorter,
more
cohesive,
and
closer
to
everyday
speech.
In
terms
of
function,
film
dialogue
still
performs
the
same
basic
tasks
as
literary
dialogue.
However,
because
cinematic
dialogue
plays
a
supporting
role
to
visual
storytelling,
its
key
functions
are
to
reinforce
imagery
and
drive
action.
In
contrast,
literary
dialogue
has
the
advantage
of
compressing
narrative
time
and
converging
various
narrative
perspectives.
