ARTISTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF VIETNAMESE METAL ENGRAVING ARTWORK
Abstract
Although metal engraving artwork only emerged in Vietnam in the 20th century, this genre has firmly
established its place in the nation's printmaking. These works not only reflect traditional values but also embody
a contemporary spirit, bringing renewed vitality and showcasing the continuous creativity of Vietnamese
artists. Over various stages of development, the art form has grown in richness and diversity ‑ from materials
and techniques to creative ideas and artistic styles. Its aesthetics combine analytical, three‑dimensional
representation with stylized, symbolic perspectives; Western techniques are adapted through Eastern visual
sensibilities within the constraints of limited local materials. The liberation from the inherent characteristics of
the medium in new forms of expression has contributed to the unique artistic identity of Vietnamese metal
engraving artwork.
