APPLICATION OF DONG SON BRONZE DRUM PATTERNS IN DESIGNING APPLIED ART PRODUCTS
Abstract
Dong Son bronze drums are a typical cultural heritage of the ancient Vietnamese, dating back more than 2000
years. The decorative motifs on the drums are exquisitely expressed, rich in symbolism and highly rhythmic.
The patterns on Dong Son bronze drums are invaluable tangible cultural heritages, clearly reflecting the
aesthetic thinking, spiritual life and technical knowledge of the Lac Viet people during the Dong Son cultural
period. With the characteristics of tight shapes, graphic language rich in symbolism and high rhythm, these
motifs have been and are being increasingly widely applied in the design of applied art products. This article
analyzes the visual value of Dong Son bronze drum patterns, surveys some typical application directions and
proposes solutions to effectively exploit this heritage in contemporary design to contribute to preserving and
promoting Vietnamese cultural identity.
