Abstract

Hoàng Kiều's Vietnamese Tones and Traditional Music represents a pivotal milestone in the interdisciplinary
study bridging Vietnamese phonology and ethnomusicology. By situating the tonal system of the Vietnamese
language in an organic relationship with the structures of traditional modes, tonal frameworks, and indigenous
scales, Hoàng Kiều constructs a new theoretical paradigm that deeply elucidates the interaction among
language, cognition, and music within Vietnamese culture. The present paper aims to review and analyze
Hoàng Kiều's core theoretical arguments while assessing the methodological and practical significance of his
work in the context of contemporary Vietnamese musicological research.
