Abstract
Listening and sight‑reading are fundamental components of musical competence for preservice music teachers.
This study examines their development at Hanoi National University of Education and the Vietnam National
Academy of Music, highlighting limitations in curriculum, teaching methods, and assessment. Based on
theoretical and practical foundations, five measures are proposed꞉ revising the Solfège course structure,
integrating digital technology, promoting active and collaborative learning, developing inner hearing, and
enhancing formative assessment. These measures aim to strengthen students' abilities to perceive, reproduce,
and express music, thereby improving the quality of music teacher education.
